Week 15 - Hello my Name is Elder Smith and this is my Companion Burton Guster

 Hey everyone!

So this week was by far one of the most fun weeks Elder Christensen and I have had together. We started out our week at the park playing football with some locals who didn't think I could run, so they stuck me at qb.  After a short game, that mostly involved dropped passes to open receivers, I decided to remind them that sometimes white dudes in dress shoes and slacks can be fast too. After that, we focused our week on finding out which members of our ward are inactive and which ones have moved by knocking doors from the ward directory. My door approach has definitely improved since I got out here, hence the title of this week's email. We met a lot of cool people and even though it was pretty boring a lot of the time it was productive work. The majority of the rest of the week was spent inviting people to the ward fiesta that we had on Saturday night. Last minute I felt like we should invite a grey dot named Jamaal that I had only met once. Plot twist, he recently  moved off to college up in Atlanta but he was in town for the weekend and wanted to come to the fiesta. That was an awesome little miracle and we got to introduce him to the local YSAs. One of our friends we met off of a prompting has a daughter that works at The Diablos that is just outside my area. She invited us to lunch Saturday and because she works there she was able to get us free lunch which was legit. She is definitely without a doubt a homie. Prince Dennis is a young guy we met a little while back, but we have been struggling to meet with him. He is going through some legal stuff right now, so if anyone wants to pray that he will be able to not go to jail so we can continue to teach him about the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, that would be much appreciated (don't worry he's not dangerous he just made the same mistake a too many times and it has caught up to him). EMMA IS GETTING BAPTIZED THIS WEEK!!!!! We taught her the last couple lessons Sunday night and she basically knew the material already, because the Long family already went over it with her, and she has been going to seminary for a while now. Basically she is a baller and was already one before she ever met me. One of the members we visited this week is the Puzey family.  They will be moving soon, and we have been gifted the honor of helping them load the moving truck this coming week. We visited them Saturday in the early afternoon, and they happened to have the BYU vs. Baylor game on. When we meet with people, we ask them to turn off any distractions while they talk with us, but the Puzeys were pretty stubborn about keeping the game on while we talked. We didn't see how the game ended but we heard it wasn't pretty. All I can say is when I left the Puzeys we were up 7-3, so I did my part. Brother Puzey made sure to come up to us after sacrament the next day and let us know that it was our fault BYU lost because we weren't loyal enough to stay and watch the whole game. I'm not sure that's true, but I like to think it is. I certainly hope that my presence in front of a TV screen is powerful enough to impact the outcome of a football game 2,000 miles away. Other than that, this week has been pretty normal. The work is progressing well, and I am enjoying being out here. I realized this week that I am at 4 months as a missionary so that's pretty cool. It definitely doesn't feel like I've been out for that long right now, but there have been times where it has seemed like much longer than that. I hope everyone has had a great week! If you are a missionary and haven't been sending me your weekly emails this is your call to repentance. As always keep on keeping on!

Week 14 - If I Focused on a Silly Thing Like Snow

Hey Everyone! This week has been intense! I'm leading the area and training for anyone that's behind.  Also I'm still in Augusta, Georgia and I'm convinced I'll probably just be here my whole mission, which wouldn't be too bad. Highlights from the week: -Sister Miller fed us again and gave us Cuban sandwiches that were so good. As a wise Elder McArthur would have said "these are so good imma smack ma grandma!" (Don't worry grandma I would never smack you over a sandwich) (sorry just reread that take 2: don't worry grandma I would never smack you over anything ever) (that applies to you too Nana). -We got to play ultimate frisbee with some new friends, and while my team did lose it was super fun, and I had some nice highlight plays. -It has rained so much recently that we are more surprised when it isn't raining.  At first, we hated it, but now Elder Christensen and I are loving the rain. -In order to increase positivity, Elder Christensen...

Week 7 - Frisbees and Free Food

Hey guys! This week was pretty uneventful for the most part. I got to meet a bunch of new Elders, two of which are just starting their training. It's weird to think that I'm not the new guy anymore. Lyndon has been progressing well and will probably be baptized this transfer if he continues to recover from his stroke. The climax of this week was probably Saturday when I got to play frisbee with some friends. They were pretty good, but nowhere near as fast or athletic as the kids at BYU, which made things a lot more fun for me. It felt good to get back on the field and win some games cause I had just gotten smoked by my D1 recruit companion in volleyball.  My companion is the new DL which means I'm gonna get to go on exchanges weekly, which will be a total blast, especially with all the new missionaries. I also got several opportunities to mend relationships with the other Elders in my district which was great. Little backstory: all the other Elders hated me all ...

Week 3 Conference and Columbians

Hey everyone! So yeah this week as you can probably guess has been crazy. That's kinda how missionary work works. This week was Zone Conference and that was amazing!  My mission President is a very inspired man. We are focusing mission wide on using the Alma and Amulek technique to help part member families. In the story of Alma and Amulek, Alma goes to the city of Ammonihah and is rejected. Alma had recently given up the judgement seat and the people of Ammonihah literally said you aren't the chief judge of us so we don't have to listen to you. I know it's like teaching 7 year olds. Alma is thrown out of the city and he starts to go home but on his way the same angel that struck him down when he was young and rebellious appears to him and says (excuse the Elder Smith translation) "Bro you need to go back to the city cause there are still people there that need you, but when you go back enter from the other side of the city and use a different approach. Oh by the...
